Seam Welder - The Seam Welder must possess knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to cut, weld, and perform other hot work as required. The Seam welder may be required to pass appropriate certification tests. The following is a list of typical work that a Seam Welder might be asked to perform:
a. Lay out work to be performed from written and oral instructions. Select most effective welding sequence.
b. Perform or directs all necessary actions to ensure proper and adequate weldments are created in accordance with industry and/or Navy standards, the higher standard will be met.
c. Create weldments, utilizing a variety of procedures, which must pass visual (VT), magnetic particle (MT), liquid penetrant (LPT), and/or radiographic inspections (RT), as appropriate.
d. Coordinates and arranges for the work of several trades in connection with performing work from information received from technical work documents, blueprints, specifications, written and/or oral instructions.
Testing Requirments:
Seam test is a 4-quadrant plate test that resembles a weld seam intersection. The test is made up of 2 tests, a 1G V- groove test and a 2G,3G V-groove test. All root passes are done utilizing ceramic tape backing with a 3/16" root opening. All test plates are of 3/8" thickness. Welding will be done using the FCAW (Fluxcore) process with .052 dual shield wire with CO2. Each tester will be responsible for knowing how to load welding wire into the machine and basic safety knowledge of using a grinder. All completed tests will be inspected visually before being accepted for and sent for RT (X-ray).
4G position also required if the WPQ1-D01 tests were not previously completed.
Acceptance Criteria: All weldments will be inspected via RT. The acceptance criteria will be in accordance with Mil-Std-2035 class 1.
Reinforcement / cover passes must be stacked from the bottom to the top
· Reinforcement cannot be below flush and shall not exceed 3/32"
· undercut shall not exceed 1/64"
· weld shall be free of porosity, cracks, incomplete fusion.
· free of underfill, burn through, incomplete fusion, cracks, porosity, arc strikes, weld splatter, and slag
Basic Job Requirements:
" Minimum of 3-5 years' experience in trade
" Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background investigation
" Shall provide own hand tools (see required tool list)
" Must have dependable transportation
" Must be able to follow instructions
" Must be able to gain access to all work locations, including government and private shipyards and/or vessels.
Physical Demands:
" Primarily involves standing and walking, performed on a frequent to constant basis
" Requires manual dexterity
" Bending, squatting, pulling/pushing, reaching and handling are required on a frequent basis
" Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., work aboard marine vessels, climb ladders, work in tanks and confined spaces, and wear required personal protective equipment.
